How to Make Custom Decals for Balloons & Backdrops
Want to add a name, logo, phrase, or custom design to your party backdrop or balloons? You can create your own DIY custom decals without spending a lot of money.
There are two easy ways to do it, depending on what you have at home. (we earn commission on some of the links at no additional cost to you, and as always, I only recommend things that have worked for me)
Option 1: Cut Vinyl with a Cricut or Silhouette
If you have a Cricut or Silhouette machine, this is my favorite way to make custom decals.
Create your design, cut it from adhesive vinyl, and use transfer paper to move the design onto your backdrop.

This method also works great for custom balloon decals. Add a name, number, logo, or fun saying directly onto your balloons.
Tip: Keep your design fairly simple, especially when applying vinyl to balloons. Tiny details can be tricky to transfer.
Option 2: Print an Adhesive Poster
Don't have a Cricut or Silhouette? No problem!
Create your design in Canva, then upload it to Walgreens or CVS and order a 16" x 20" adhesive poster.
And don't forget to look for a coupon code before you check out. Walgreens and CVS frequently offer photo and print discounts, which can make this DIY even more budget-friendly.
Once you receive your adhesive poster:

Cut around your design with scissors.

If you have a die-cut machine, you can use that instead.

Peel off the backing and attach your custom design to your backdrop.
This is such an easy way to create a personalized party backdrop without buying an expensive custom sign.
One important note: I have not had success using this method on balloons. The adhesive poster works great on a backdrop, but for balloons, I recommend Option 1 and using vinyl.
Which Option Should You Use?
If you have a Cricut or Silhouette, Option 1 is the most versatile because you can use vinyl on both backdrops and balloons.
If you don't have a cutting machine, Option 2 is an easy and affordable way to create a custom backdrop using Canva and a local print store.
Either way, you can create personalized party decor that looks custom without paying custom prices.
