15 Easy Ways to Turn a Home Depot Foam Board into a Gorgeous Party Backdrop

Professional-looking party backdrops don't have to cost hundreds of dollars.
One of our favorite party hacks at Joyza is using inexpensive foam insulation boards from Home Depot to create custom backdrops that look like they came from a luxury event company. They're lightweight, easy to cut, simple to transport, and pair perfectly with a DIY balloon garland.
The best part? Most of these ideas can be completed in under an hour and don't require any crafting experience.
Here are our favorite ways to transform a simple foam board into the star of your celebration.

SHOPPING LIST:
- Home Depot Foam Board (8'x4')
- Stand (to tape board to)
- Tape (used to secure board to the stand)
- Flooring (if you want to hide ugly flooring at the backdrop/photo spot)
1. Create a Custom-Size Backdrop
Use a utility knife to cut the foam board into the size of your choice (or keep it 8'x4'). I like 6'x3' because it can easily fit into my mid-size SUV for all the school and venue parties I get voluntold to do. Paint it your party color or cover it with almost anything (I'll show you below).
Perfect for:
-
Baby showers
-
Bridal showers
-
First birthdays
-
Weddings
Add one of Joyza's balloon garland kits along one side for a professional designer look.
2. Wrap It in a Bedsheet
Skip painting altogether.
Stretch an inexpensive fitted bedsheet or a flat bedsheet over the foam board and secure it to the back with binder clips or tape. Honestly, any fabric will work...but as a budget queen, I buy guest room linen sheets that also serve as party decor. My guests love sleeping in last year's birthday party backdrop, ha! Linen, velvet, satin, and gauze instantly create a high-end backdrop.
Those spandex table covers also work! Just make sure you get the 8ft table covers.

3. Turf Rug
Wrap a turf rug (cut it down to size and leave 3" on all sides to wrap around) and use a heavy-duty stapler gun to secure it to the foam board.

4. Cover It with Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Wallpaper instantly transforms foam board into faux wood, marble, brick, terrazzo, or modern patterns.
No painting required.
5. Add Balloon Garlands
A foam board becomes an instant focal point when paired with a balloon garland.
Instead of hanging balloons on a wall, attach your garland directly to the foam board for a freestanding display that works indoors or outdoors.

6. Wrapping Paper or Bulletin Board Paper
Wrap thick wrapping paper or bulletin board paper around the foam board like wrapping a gift (or how we did the turf rug) and secure with painter's tape or plumbing tape.
This is perfect for specific party themes, and you don't want to splurge on custom designs from a decorator.

7. Turn It into a Giant Gift Box
Wrap the entire foam board with wrapping paper and finish it with an oversized ribbon.
Guests will think it's a giant present behind the dessert table.

8. Add Vinyl Names and Quotes
Using a Cricut or pre-cut vinyl letters, personalize the backdrop with:
-
Happy Birthday
-
Oh Baby
-
Bride to Be
-
Let's Party
-
Class of 2027
Personalization instantly makes inexpensive materials look custom.
9. Cover It with Fringe
Plastic table fringe isn't just for tables.
Glue fringe across the entire foam board to create a textured backdrop that's perfect for disco, Barbie, tropical, or fiesta parties.
10. Create Faux Panel Walls
Use a ruler to lightly score vertical or square panel lines into the foam.
Once painted, it resembles expensive custom wood paneling.
11. Add Neon Signs
Foam board is lightweight enough to support battery-powered LED signs.
Popular signs include:
-
Better Together
-
Oh Baby
-
Happy Birthday
-
Let's Party
12. Create Seasonal Backdrops
Reuse the same foam board throughout the year.
Simply change the decorations.
Ideas include:
-
Valentine's Day
-
Easter
-
Graduation
-
Halloween
-
Thanksgiving
-
Christmas
-
New Year's Eve
13. Layer Multiple Shapes
Instead of one backdrop, cut several arches, circles, or waves from multiple foam boards.
Overlap them for the layered designer look seen at luxury events.
14. Make a Dessert Table Feature
Place the foam board directly behind your dessert table.
Add balloons, signage, and fresh flowers for an instant photo-worthy setup.
15. Build a Pinterest-Worthy Photo Booth
Your guests will naturally gather where the backdrop is.
Add:
-
Balloon garlands
-
A personalized sign
-
Faux florals
-
Fun props
-
A cute rug
Now you've created a DIY photo booth for a fraction of the cost of renting one.
